That fall polio claimed the life of one of the confirmands, Marie Ford. Many polio cases were reported, so parents discouraged children from going into crowds.

Lillian worked "candling eggs,” a process of holding them before a light to determine if they were okay. Next she worked at the Decorah Hospital. After a time she moved to Cedar Rapids where she also worked in a hospital.

She married Vernon Thompson. They had two daughters: Melody and Katheryn. The marriage failed. Lillian supported her daughters by working at Wilson’s and later at Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids.

She met and married Keith Schreiber. They had three sons: Keith Thomas, Kenneth and David. All the children are married. Melody lives in Kentucky and Katheryn in Mt. Vernon, IA. Kenneth and David teach high school and coach. Keith Thomas teaches at the university level.

Lillian died with cancer in 1996.

Schultz, Elmer and Amanda (Reinhardt)

Elmer B. Schultz, son of Henry and Alvina (Warnholz) Schultz, was born 9 Jan 1905 on a farm near Castalia in Bloomfield Twp. He was baptized and confirmed at the Zion Lutheran Church, Castalia. He attended rural school near his home.

During World War II Elmer served in the U.S. Navy Seabees. He was stationed in the South Pacific. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans.

Elmer and Amanda Reinhardt (b. 24 Sep 1904) were married 15 Feb 1952. She worked for many years as a clerk in the store in Castalia. Elmer and Amanda lived on a farm north of Castalia. An interesting feature on the Schultz farm was a 5 acre, artificial lake Elmer constructed and stocked with several kinds of fish. This lake became known as Walden Pond. Also found in the area were wild ducks and geese and a few wild turkeys. A big project of Elmer and Amanda was to raise several varieties of ducks and geese which they sold each fall.

Elmer and Amanda were members of St Paul Lutheran Church, Postville. In their retirement years, they enjoyed antique collecting.

Elmer died 31 Jan 1977. Amanda then moved to Postville. She died 28 Jan 1995 at the Good Samaritan Home in Postville.

Schultz, Henry and Amanda (Einck)

Henry Schultz was born 7 Jan 1902 to Henry Schutlz, Sr. and Alvina (Warnholtz) Schultz at the farm home in Section 10, Bloomfield Twp, Winneshiek Co, IA. The immigrant ancestor of this family was Joachim Schulz who came from Buckholz, Mechlenburg, Germany in 1865. Henry and Alvina were the parents of five sons: George, Joe, Henry, Elmer, and Roy and two daughters: Mabel and Elsie.

Henry Schultz, Jr. worked for Bell Telephone putting up poles and wires prior to 1925. He married Amanda Einck 23 Feb 1925 at the home of the priest of St. Francis DeSales Catholic Church. Amanda was born 11 Nov 1904 at the home of her parents, Bernhard “Ben” Einck and Juliana (Doerr) Einck on a farm in Military Twp. near Ossian, IA. Mr. and Mrs. Ben Einck were the parents of: Amanda, Arthur, Irene, Frederick, and Jerome.

Henry worked in Castalia in 1928 when the highway was being built and was in charge of the “turn table” where the cement trucks were loaded. He also worked as a farm laborer. He did telephone repair for the Pleasant Ridge Telephone Co. in Bloomfield Twp. He worked as a carpenter, and for 10 years worked with Vivas Bollman building and wiring new homes for electricity. In 1933 Henry was a rural mail carrier, and in 1940 was appointed postmaster in Castalia for 15 months. In 1942, he again was a rural mail carrier which he continued until 1966.

In 1955 Henry and Amanda bought an acreage of land in the country east of Castalia where they built a new house.

Henry and Amanda Schultz are the parents of three children:

Geneva attended school at Castalia and the Catholic school in Ossian. After graduation from St. Francis DeSales High School, she attended Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls and became a teacher in Milford, IA. She married Mervin Kenneth “Ken" Knudtson 16 Apr 1947. He worked at the elevator at Festoria, IA. They are the parents of Julie, Margaret, Michael, Lynn, Jeffrey, and David. Ken and Geneva Knudtson are now retired and living in their farm home near Milford.

Arthur William graduated from Postville, IA in 1946. He married Dorothy Sloan 25 Oct 1951. They had a son, Douglas (27 Apr 1958-28 Mar 1974). Arthur was employed by the U.S. Postal Department until his retirement. Art and Dorothy Schultz are now residents of Urbandale, IA and Yuma, AZ.

Lyle H.  married Betsy Price in 1959. They had two children: Kristin and Stephen. Lyle was divorced and later married Phyllis Dyer. Lyle became a mechanical engineer at Sandia. He lives in Albuquerque, NM.

Henry Schultz died 27 Feb 1985 in Postville. He is buried at St. Francis DeSales Cemetery in Ossian.

Schultz, Joe and Sarah Mae (Schellhammer)

Joe Schultz was born 29 Mar 1895, the son of Henry and Alvina (Warnholtz) Schultz. He was married on 24 Feb 1921 to Sarah Mae Schellhammer (b. 30 Jan 1898), the daughter of Fred J. and Katherine (Mundt) Schellhammer. Joe volunteered in World War I and served in France. He worked as mechanic for Harvey Brothers and also Baltz Garage from 1920 to 1925. Mae worked for Haefner General Merchandise Store in Castalia.

In 1926 Joe and Mae moved to the Schellhammer farm southeast of Castalia. While farming Joe owned and operated a threshing machine and had two threshing rings that included eight to ten farmers in each ring. Each year
